Toplands Clay shoot set up in Woodplumpton by Roy Dransfield, former Grasshoppers player, and his family on their farm over 15 years ago and in that time have raised a miraculous amount for charities donating in the region of £90,000 to local causes.

The club of around 50 dedicated clay pigeon shooters and open to non-members with an interest in the hobby, was originally set up on a much smaller scale. However due to growing interest in the Preston club, it has now grown allowing the local family to easily handle large numbers of shooters, and what started with humble beginnings has now grown into one of the biggest charity shoots in the North of England, showing local communities can make a huge difference.

The tenth fundraising event held this summer raised £11,200 which was given to the clubs four charities of choice: Heartbeat NWCC, Headway Central Lancashire, MNDA Garstang and MS Society Preston. They received £2500 each and the generous ‘leftovers’ to the Parish of Woodplumpton as they received a donation of £1200.

The Clay Shoot have held 10 fundraisers over ten years, organised by the family-run charity and supported by volunteers who help on the day. This years charity event consisted of a clay shoot, an auction and a raffle where local businesses can donate to help stack up the cash, all shooters are welcome to donate.

The first or the ten fundraising events was held in 2010 and have been annual ever since. However two fundraising events had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdown, but this didn’t stop the Preston family falling on their feet as they continue to hold huge fundraisers with restrictions easing.

Alison Dransfield, part owner of the club and daughter of Roy, said: “The reason we donate to the charities is because they have been involved with helping our members or their families. Our regulars that come week in week out choose the charities.

“The charities are always really appreciative of the donations. We try to do local things as much as we can. I would like to thank Varley Insulation Products as our sponsor this year, they also provided a stage for our live singer Mark Melling.”

You too can get involved supporting the charity fundraising or the shooting through their website.
